In this region a large proportion of dogs come from a Spanish shelter or straight off the street. Those dogs have learned to survive without people. That does not disappear by being kind. It is a working system that comes with them into your home.
In the first few weeks a dog like this often shows their best behaviour. That is survival mode: stay quiet and wait. Only after four to eight weeks does the real dog appear. Many people are alarmed by that and think they have done something wrong. They have not. That is the moment your dog feels safe enough.
Breed matters here. A podenco is bred to hunt independently and makes their own decisions. A galgo is often quiet and obliging until something runs. A mastín guards whatever they see as their own ground. Anybody who treats a dog like that as a labrador will get stuck.
How long does it take? Reckon on three months before you know who you have in the house, and on a year before your dog has really settled. That sounds long and it is honest.
When it works, your dog goes out of the door at their own pace, without you having to coax them.
In six years I have worked with well over a hundred dogs. Some of those cases produced assistance dogs, dogs who ended up doing work for their owner.
There are dogs I follow for months because a lot has to change, and families from the village who have me over three times and manage on their own after that.
The approach is the same in every case. Look at what is really happening, then teach the owner what they need to do differently.
Only once recall has worked a hundred times on a long line. With a podenco or galgo with a hunting drive, sometimes never without a fence, and that is not a lack of training.
Then you do not touch your dog. Force confirms what they already think. You build trust by being predictable, not by pushing.
Comforting is always allowed. A frightened dog does not become more frightened by your calm. That is a stubborn misunderstanding. What does not help is pushing, or seeking the situation out because your dog just needs to get used to it. Your dog does not need pity, they need somebody who is predictable.
Four questions. You will not get a price list back, you will get what I would do if you rang me now, and what the first step costs.
I do not know how many appointments your dog needs before I have seen them. That depends on how long it has been going on, on what has already been tried, on who at home takes part, and on what your dog has been through.
Anybody who gives you a number up front is selling you a figure, not an approach. What I can do: tell you exactly what one appointment costs, and after that appointment tell you honestly what else is needed. Even if that means you do not need to buy anything more from me.
This is how it is worked out. The starting point is the centre of Jávea. Of the total travel time there and back, the first hour is included in the fee. Anything beyond that costs € 75 per hour, pro rata per minute. For example: Valencia is an 80 minute drive, so 160 minutes there and back. Of that, 60 minutes are included in the fee, and the remaining 100 minutes come to € 125. That amount is fixed in advance, so you know it before I get in the car.
