Not coming back when you call

Does this sound familiar?

  • Your dog never goes off lead any more, because you do not know if recall will work
  • Your dog looks at you when you call and then carries on
  • At home your dog listens perfectly, outside they seem deaf
  • You have once spent half an hour chasing after your dog

The message is ready. All you have to do is press send.

What is really going on

Calling stops working the moment coming back pays off less than carrying on. It happens gradually. Every time you call that name and nothing follows, the name is worth a little bit less.

Often something else is added: coming back means the end of the walk, the lead going on, or an angry voice. Your dog works that out and does not come back, because coming back has turned out badly.

There is plenty to chase around here as well. Cats, lizards, rabbits, the scent of game. For a dog with a hunting instinct, your voice is competing with something that is built in.

How we go about it

  1. We start with a new word. The old one is worn out and we will not get it clean again.
  2. We make recall the best moment of the walk, and never the end of it. Coming back and being allowed to go again is the key.
  3. We work with a long line, so your dog does not have the option of failing. Practising at a moment when it can go wrong is practising failure.
  4. We build the distraction up step by step, from the garden to a quiet path to a place with other dogs. Not the other way round.

How long does it take? Six to twelve weeks until you dare let your dog off the lead again. With a dog with a strong hunting drive the long line stays necessary in certain places, and that is not failure but good sense.

When it works, you call once and your dog comes. Not because they have to, but because coming back has always ended well.

A hundred dogs, no two the same

100+dogs helped since 2020

In six years I have worked with well over a hundred dogs. Some of those cases produced assistance dogs, dogs who ended up doing work for their owner.

There are dogs I follow for months because a lot has to change, and families from the village who have me over three times and manage on their own after that.

The approach is the same in every case. Look at what is really happening, then teach the owner what they need to do differently.

Frequently asked questions

Does a whistle help?

Often yes, because it always sounds the same and carries no emotion. Your voice changes when you are irritated, a whistle does not.

Can I be cross when my dog finally comes back?

Never. Your dog links that punishment to coming back, not to running off. It is the fastest way to ruin recall.

My dog runs after cats.

Then we work first on the moment before the sprint. Once the running starts your dog cannot hear you any more, and that is not unwillingness.

What fits your situation?

Four questions. You will not get a price list back, you will get what I would do if you rang me now, and what the first step costs.

What makes it shorter

  • It has not been going on for months
  • You can practise ten minutes a day
  • Everyone in the house does the same
  • Your dog is young and nothing is stuck yet

What makes it longer

  • It has been there for years
  • There has already been a bite
  • At home everyone does it slightly differently
  • Your dog came off the street and the history is unknown
  • Pain or illness plays a part

Why I do not quote a total price

I do not know how many appointments your dog needs before I have seen them. That depends on how long it has been going on, on what has already been tried, on who at home takes part, and on what your dog has been through.

Anybody who gives you a number up front is selling you a figure, not an approach. What I can do: tell you exactly what one appointment costs, and after that appointment tell you honestly what else is needed. Even if that means you do not need to buy anything more from me.

Travel costs per visit, from Jávea to you

This is how it is worked out. The starting point is the centre of Jávea. Of the total travel time there and back, the first hour is included in the fee. Anything beyond that costs € 75 per hour, pro rata per minute. For example: Valencia is an 80 minute drive, so 160 minutes there and back. Of that, 60 minutes are included in the fee, and the remaining 100 minutes come to € 125. That amount is fixed in advance, so you know it before I get in the car.
